The Queen’s most unexpected celebrity connections – from Beyonce to Johnny Depp

Queen Elizabeth II is the longest reigning monarch in British history, so it is only fitting that Her Royal Highness celebrates her 70th year on the throne with a bang.

As the Platinum Jubilee concert airs on BBC tonight (June 4), royal fans are expecting to see some the biggest names in Hollywood in attendance at the exclusive event.

Though many of the British royal family’s extended connections are well known, what many fans don’t know is that the infamous monarch is related to many of the famous faces on the big screen.

As fans prepare to tune into the jubilee celebrations, Daily Star has taken a look inside Her Royal Highness’s most surprising celebrity connections.

Hilary Duff

Hilary Duff rose to fame in the early noughties as the lead role of the Disney Channel series Lizzie McGuire which became a huge hit with viewers all over the world.

After her ascent to fame, the blonde bombshell went on to appear in a slew of romantic comedy moves including Cheaper by the Dozen, A Cinderella Story and Agent Cody Banks.

One thing many of her loyal legion of fans may not know is that the 34-year-old is related to several members of the British royal family.

The mum-of-three is known as “America’s most royal celebrity” according to Insider following a 2012 study which revealed that the actress is the 18th cousin of Queen Elizabeth and is also related to Alexander Spotswood, the 10th great-grandson of Edward III.

She’s one of the biggest names in pop history for her incredible number one hit singles such as Crazy in Love, Irreplaceable and Single Ladies.

Beyonce Knowles made her impact on pop music when she formed the 90s girl group Destiny’s Child back in 1990 with her friends Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams.

But in 2003, the chart topper opted to go solo as she stormed to the top of the charts with her debut solo album Dangerously in Love which received rave reviews following her collaborations with her future husband Jay-Z.

And now it turns out Beyonce pop nickname’s Queen B may have a ring truth to it after it was discovered the songstress is Queen Elizabeth’s 25th cousin once removed.

Most will know him as the face of Captain Jack Sparrow in the Disney blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean, or from his dark and mysterious characters behind the gothic mind of Tim Burton.

In recent months, the Hollywood star has been wrapped up in a gruelling defamation trial between himself and his ex-wife Amber Heard over an article she wrote in The Washington Post back in 2018.

The jury outcome was revealed this week with Depp winning his case.

However, the actor isn’t just famous for his impressive slew of award-winning movies, after a recent genealogist on BBC’s Who Do You Think You Are revealed the dad-of-two is related to a member of the royal family.

During the TV show, expert Nick Barratt explained the actor is likely 20th cousins with Her Royal Highness.

It’s fair to say Ritchie is one of the most recognisable names in British film, known for directing gangster films set in London such as Snatch, The Gentlemen and The Man from U.N.C.L.E.

The star also directed Disney’s 2019 live-action remake of Aladdin as well as both of the Robert Downey Jr. Sherlock Holmes films which were released in 2009 and 2011.

And it appears as though the star was set for success from the beginning following in his famous family’s legacy, including none other than Kate Middleton.

It turns out the director is quite close with his royal relative who is, in fact, the sixth cousin to the Duchess of Cambridge.

The dynamic duo is said to get on well with her distant cousin extremely well, especially after the Hollywood star was one of the guests who attended Will and Kate’s royal wedding back in 2011.

One Hollywood hunk fans continue to swoon over is none other than British gent and romantic comedy legend Hugh Grant.

Viewers will recognise him from such hit films as Bridget Jones’ Diary, Notting Hill and Love Actually which fans included for his iconic dancing scene in Number 10 Downing Street.

And it turns out fame is in his blood according to Insider magazine, which stated that the award-winning actor is the ninth cousin once removed of Queen Elizabeth.

It is understood his lineage goes all the way back to royals including King Henry VII of England and King James IV of Scotland.

But his impressive ancestry does not stop at British royalty as the star can also be tied to historical figures from the United States, including George Washington, Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson.

Many people will know him for his legendary role as the deeply terrifying and nasally challenged villain Lord Voldemort in the epic Harry Potter franchise.

Ralph Fiennes made his impact on Hollywood when he rose to fame in 1992 as leading man Heathcliff in Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights opposite Juliette Binoche.

Since then, the actor has gone on to perform in a slew of killer roles including Schindler’s list and even went on to take over as ‘M’ in the most recent James Bond films.

And it’s fair to say the actor is no stranger to playing royal characters throughout his career but it turns out the star is also related to the future King of England.

As reported by the Financial Times back in 2014, the actor are actually believed to be Prince Charles’ eighth cousin.

It is understood that they’re related through James II of Scotland, who ruled during the 15th century.

Another actor related to the Royal Family, is none other than Academy award winner Tilda Swinton who rose to stardom in 1989 with her hit blockbuster War Requiem opposite Laurence Olivier.

Since then, the blonde bombshell has gone on to take Hollywood by storm starring in such hits as Orlando, Doctor Strange and the Narnia film franchise.

But what many movie buffs may be unaware of is that the actress’s ancestors went on to inspire the historical movie Braveheart.

In 2009, Edinburgh researchers traced her lineage to Robert the Bruce, the Scottish King who battled with Edward I over control of Scotland in the 14th century.
