Cloud to support healthcare: Aws for Health debuts – CorCom

Covid-19 highlighted the need for healthcare companies to use data more effectively to quickly discover insights. In this sector, the challenge to be overcome will be to understand how to manage the enormous volume of health information created every day and stored in different systems and in different formats: from clinical documentation to scientific data, passing through the next generation sequencing, CryoEM, research reports and medical images. Additionally, new approaches to therapy development, such as decentralized clinical trials, increased pressure to get drugs to market quickly, and new types of treatments, such as mRNA vaccines, require insights, not just data.

In this scenario Amazon Web Services ha introdotto Aws for Health, an initiative that offers cloud services created specifically for healthcare organizations with the aim of solving the various challenges of this sector, such as healthcare interoperability to speed up diagnosis, streamlining of therapeutic discovery processes to create life-saving drugs faster and even bringing genomic analysis to the point of care for precision medicine, all in a compliant and safe way.

For example, during the pandemic, Rush University Medical Center partnered with AWS to create a cloud-based analytics hub using AWS for Health services, such as Amazon HealthLake. This hub allows them to securely analyze patient admissions, discharges and hospital capacity via real-time updated dashboards to provide care for the most critically ill patients. Rush University Medical Center is now using what it has learned to provide personalized care for people in need and improve health equity. Thanks to API HealthLake, it was possible to identify and fill gaps in health care with predictive models of the social determinants of health on Chicago’s West Side.

Moderna, for example, is leading the way in developing a new generation of drugs using messenger RNA for vaccines and personalized cancer therapies. Moderna runs its Drug Design Studio on AWS scalable compute and storage infrastructure to rapidly design mRNA sequences and uses machine learning to optimize those sequences and bring them to production faster. This allowed the first clinical batch of the Covid-19 vaccine candidate to be delivered to the National Institutes of Health for the Phase-1 study only 42 days after the initial sequencing of the virus.

Moderna’s speed is based on another key element in the healthcare space: genomics. But translating human genomes, which are roughly 800 megabytes in size, requires computational power that until recently took weeks, as well as thousands of dollars. But, when trying to diagnose a patient, every second matters, so scientists need readily implementable solutions that can provide them with answers in minutes, not weeks.

Aws partner Illumina built the Dragen Bio-IT platform on Aws EC2 F1 instances to provide large-scale access to patented accelerated genomic analysis tools on a global scale. Now, clients like the Munich Leukemia Laboratory (Mll) are using Dragen on Illumina Connected Analytics to reduce the genome processing time of a single sample from 10 hours to 30 minutes, helping them accelerate research and focus on developing better leukemia diagnostics.
