The business prospects of digital health remain high, with artificial intelligence, digital therapies and health ecosystems the main trends in digital health. These are the key themes developed within the Research 2 Guidance “Global Digital Health Business Outlook Survey 2022”. The industry mood index

Digital health stakeholders have an optimistic view on market development in 2022, measured with the “mood index” on a scale of 0 to 3: the survey indicates an average of 2.1 for 2022 against 2, 3 of 2021. The estimates on the business prospects of the representatives of digital health companies for their business therefore remain positive even if slightly lower than the previous year.

The main trends

As for the main trends in digital health, the survey highlights a prevalence of artificial intelligence (57%), followed by digital therapies (44%) and digital health ecosystems (42%). Furthermore, respondents point to startups as key factors in the system and, just under half of the sample, believe that technology giants will be instrumental in digital health.

Among the big names in tech, the names of Amazon and Apple stand out, indicated respectively by 62% and 51% of the sample as the main players in digital health. Google / Alphabet ranks only in third place (41%). In particular, the Research 2 Guidance report cites the Apple Watch and Apple Health Records (EHR) initiatives that will expand during the year. Amazon is also expected to expand its Amazon Care services in 2022, offering virtual care services in the United States and nurse home visits. In addition, thanks to Echo and Alexa, it will be able to offer virtual assistant services to clients with healthcare needs.


Investments in digital health are expected to remain stable: 56% of the sample believe they will be in line with 2021, while 40% forecast a growth in liquidity towards companies that deal with digital health. The main sources of revenue are digital health services (56%), remote monitoring services (44%) and bundle sales (37%).

The target

Patients are the main recipients of digital health services, according to the survey, followed by health insurance (32%), health professionals (27%), employers (25%). It is no coincidence that the first places for digital health services are remote monitoring of patients, data analysis, artificial intelligence and telemedicine (41%), aimed at improving performance for people suffering from some illness.
