The Hampshire hotspot packed full of celebrity homes

The Hampshire hotspot packed full of celebrity homes

Some parts of the country seem to attract celebrities more than others. Sandbanks in Bournemouth, one of the most expensive areas in the UK to live, is home to Harry Redknapp and reportedly the chosen home to other former footballers and managers Graeme Souness and Tony Pulis.

Cheshire and Essex are also home to many of the rich and famous, and Surrey is also home to numerous celebrities including Eamonn Holmes, Andy Murray and former Hampshire resident Amanda Holden.

And right here in Hampshire we also have our own links to celebrities. One area in particular that is home to many a celebrity is the New Forest. Famous faces including Esther Rantzen and Chris Packham call the area home and One Direction star Louis Tomlinson was pictured in the area in November.

But there is another area of Hampshire that can give the New Forest a good run for its money. East Hampshire, made up of places including Petersfield and Alton, is as far away from the New Forest as you can get in the county.

With borders to West Sussex and Surrey, the area sits partly in the South Downs and is also a short drive and train journey to London and Portsmouth. With that in mind, it is perhaps unsurprising the area is a popular spot for celebrities to call home.

The area is also home to some of the best and most exclusive schools in the country. Churcher’s School in Petersfield educated actor Alex Lawther, while Beadles School also near the town educated Location, Location, Location star Kirstie Allsopp, as well as three-time Oscar winning actor Daniel Day-Lewis, Cara Delevingne and Lily Allen.

Lily Allen, and her younger brother Alfie Allen, who starred in Game of Thrones, were both sent to the almost £30,000 a year school by their famous dad, actor and musician Keith Allen. Allen is not however the only musician to have reportedly chosen to educate their children in and around Hampshire.

In 2019, former Oasis star Noel Gallagher is reported to have purchased an incredible £8 million mansion not far from Petersfield. The Daily Mail reported at the time that the star had purchased the property to allow his children to attend one of the many great public schools in the area.

Gallagher is believed to still live in the area, spending time at the South Downs property when not on tour with Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds. Further north from Petersfield, and in the Alton area of East Hampshire a number of other celebs have made themselves at home.

Alan Titchmarsh has lived in a Grade II listed Georgian farmhouse in Alton for almost 20 years. You may remember the sleepy market town hit national headlines earlier this year after actor Alec Baldwin was spotted wandering down the high street.

And no, Baldwin wasn’t in town for a catch up with broadcasting legend Titchmarsh (or Love Island 2021 star Hugo Hammond who also has called the area home). The American was reportedly in the town to film a new drama in the area.

A few miles north of Alton you will come to the village of Froyle. A quiet location with plenty of green space, it is perhaps unsurprising that one of the country’s most known property experts would call the village home.

Location, Location, Location star Phil Spencer moved to the rural Hampshire countryside in 2015 with his family. The star is reported to live in a mansion purchased for £3.35 million.

The stars mentioned above however are not the celebrities to have called the area home. Comedian John Bishop used to live nearby and was known to visit the gym at The Old Thorns down the road in Liphook.

Take That star Mark Owen also reportedly lived close to Petersfield before moving to the US. Russian billionaire and outgoing Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich also owned an £18m estate near the town for a number of years, although this was just over the border from Hampshire in West Sussex.

Not a million miles from Roman Abramovich’s former home, Downton Abbey star Hugh Bonneville is rumoured to live close to Midhurst. The star was however in East Hampshire the other week as he attended a charity screening of Downton Abbey: A New Era at Liphook’s new Living Room Cinema.
