Support the prompt resumption of tourist exchanges between Italy and the United States with shared actions to optimize intermodality: this is the priority that emerged during a meeting between the top management of Spring tourism, Airlines 4 America (delegation of US airlines) e Sea, the company that manages the airports of Milan Malpensa and Linate, which took place in recent days. The sudden restart of flights to and from the States, in fact, despite the persistence of the pandemic crisis and the unknown factor of the Russian-Ukrainian war, gives good hope for a return to the levels of 2019, and the full operation of the airport terminals, with the development of new flights and destinations, are a good encouragement.
In particular, the increase in traffic with 80.4 million passengers transited through Italian airports in 2021 (+ 52%) and the resumption of the airport of Milan Malpensa with 9.6 million passengers (second busiest airport in Italy) they induce a cautious optimism.
I American tourists they are starting to travel again, Italy is among the favorite destinations and North America is the most important intercontinental market for Malpensa. And precisely in view of the gradual return of these flows, it is necessary to strengthen, after two years of restrictions, the air connections between Italy and the United States and to restart investments between the two countries not only for tourism, but also for economic exchanges. That’s why it takes an adequate enhancement of intermodality and infrastructurewith a careful eye on sustainable growth.
In this regard, the president of Federturismo Marina Lalli he commented: “Airports in recent years, before the pandemic, have played a key role in fostering the strong growth in air and tourist traffic flows thanks to investments in infrastructure and close commercial relations with many airlines worldwide. Airports are fundamental systems for the development of the territory and for its promotion, which must go back to being focal points of attractiveness also by increasing commercial agreements with carriers to meet passenger demand. The meeting with Airlines for America represents an opportunity to strengthen collaborations and guarantee crucial synergies for the recovery of the air transport industry ».
In the same days, our Minister of Tourism flew to New York, Massimo Garavagliawith the CEO of Enit, Roberta Garibaldi. Both, with representatives of ICE, Bank of Italy, the Italy-America Chamber of Commerce and Coni, met for a high-level debate organized at theUN Assembly during the first sector summit “Putting sustainable and resilient tourism at the heart of an inclusive recovery”.

Compared to 2019, flows in April are still down by 25.9%, but then there is a recovery in May with -15.4% and in June with -9.9% of bookings.
