NEW YORK, March 22, 2022–(BUSINESS WIRE) – American Express (NYSE: AXP) today released the relazione American Express Travel: 2022 Global Travel Trends1, which shows that people want to travel to a greater extent than last year, and that they plan to spend at least as much in 2022 as in a normal pre-pandemic year. Based on data from the United States, Australia, Canada, Mexico, Japan, India and the United Kingdom, the document reveals that consumers are currently aiming to visit the people and destinations they love, celebrate important life events, fulfill their wishes, live events in the first person and take more care of personal well-being and health. In the fourth quarter of 2021, global bookings made by cardholders through American Express Travel rose 24% compared to 2019, an upward trend that continued into 2022.

Highlights from the American Express Travel Report: 2022 Global Travel Trends1:

  • The world is ready to travel: 74% of respondents say they are willing to book a trip for 2022, even if it needs to be canceled or modified later1. This is a 56% increase compared to last year.2

  • The willingness to spend in this sector is surpassing pre-pandemic levels: 86% of consumers expect to spend at least as much on tourism activities in 2022 as in a normal pre-pandemic year1.

  • Tourists want to travel more frequently: in 62% of cases, respondents plan 2 to 4 trips in 2022, while 76% of them plan to travel more with their family in 2022 than in 2021.

  • Vacationers are looking for brands that prioritize supporting local communities: 81% of respondents want to visit places where they can immerse themselves in the local culture and want what they spend on tourism to reach local communities.

  • Dream destinations come true: 55% of survey respondents, especially Millennials (67%) and Generation Z (65%), want to book a dream vacation this year.

  • With the return of entertainment, travel to live events also returns: 56% of respondents say they have avoided traveling to attend important shows in the last year, but plan to return to this type of event later in the year.
