YSL BEAUTY LAUNCHES REWILD OUR EARTH, A NEW IMPORTANT INITIATIVE IN THE FIELD OF SUSTAINABILITY IN COLLABORATION WITH THE RENOWNED NGO RE: WILD

This ambitious global program marks a new era for the leading luxury brand in the beauty industry, which has also revamped its largest sustainability platform

PARIS, April 20, 2022 / PRNewswire / – Today, in preparation for Earth Day, YSL Beauty announced the launch of a global program entitled REWILD OUR EARTH, in collaboration with the global NGO Re: wild, testifying the deep commitment that the brand places in safeguarding the planet and its inhabitants. Inspired by the brand’s long-standing involvement in the Ourika Valley, Morocco, with the innovative Ourika Community Gardens initiative, this project is part of the brand’s new sustainability platform, known as:

CHANGE THE RULES, CHANGE THE FUTURE

This renewed vision is based on three key principles:

To further express this commitment to transparency, YSL Beauty also released its first sustainability report, which highlights the brand’s efforts in every aspect of its business.

Rewild Our Earth: A LONG-TERM INITIATIVE TO PROTECT AND RESTORE NATURE

Commitment to the planet is at the heart of the YSL Beauty brand, inspired by the legacy of Mr. Saint Laurent, a nature lover who drew inspiration from the natural wonders of Morocco throughout his career.

Since introducing the groundbreaking Ourika Community Gardens project in Morocco in 2013, the brand has been working to restore endangered environments and has been helping to strengthen local communities for nearly a decade.

In 2021, the brand affirmed its commitment to the United Nations decade for the restoration of ecosystems.

Now, with the launch of Rewild Our Earth, YSL Beauty will work in partnership with Re: wild, a world-renowned non-governmental organization operating in 188 protected areas in 89 countries, to protect and restore biodiversity and to promote ecological restoration globally.

For 2022, it will be particularly dedicated to launching “rewilding” programs in high priority areas, to protect the biodiversity of the places from which the brand draws the raw materials and ingredients to create its products.

Rewilding is an innovative conservation method that is based on a progressive commitment aimed at favoring natural processes, restoring damaged ecosystems and degraded landscapes. In other words, it’s about letting nature take care of itself.

Stephan Bezy, International General Manager, YSL Beauty, dice:

“We at YSL Beauty believe in the philosophy of giving, not just receiving, renewing,

not just about consuming. And most of all, we believe in making the world around us stronger.

Today unspoiled nature is disappearing. At a time when more than a million species are threatened with extinction and 75% of all land areas are subject to environmental degradation, this long-term project has the potential to make a contribution. significant. To put this philosophy into practice, we decided to commit ourselves with courage to carry out a real rewilding revolution. Our ambition, in essence, is to make a concrete contribution to restore its pristine nature to the world by 2030. “

Penny Langhammer, Ph.D., Executive Vice President, Re:wild dice:

“As a global society, our livelihood, as well as the health of our planet, depends on nature, since we are innately interconnected.

To combat climate change, it is not necessary to reinvent the planet, what we have to do is to restore nature to it and make sure that our ecosystems can be restored. Through this long-term collaboration with YSL Beauty, we want to focus all our efforts on the protection and restoration of the areas that are truly indispensable for the life of the Planet “

For 2022, “Rewild Our Earth” will focus on the following high priority areas:

1. THE OURIKA VALLEY, Morocco is an area where the brand grows various ingredients, including pomegranate, marshmallow, iris, jasmine, walnut and saffron, which is at the heart of YSL Beauty’s sustainability strategy.

Ourika Community Gardens is a project launched in 2013 as a social responsibility program linked to the Planet, which tangibly testifies the brand’s commitment to sustainability. Today in this extraordinary place, which is home to more than 200 species of plants, the brand continues to help communities of women to be able to improve their economic situation and their living conditions through a co-created cooperative. In addition to the Gardens, since 2017 YSL Beauty has been working more extensively in the entire Ourika Valley region to plant trees and restore arid land, so far planting over 125,000 trees in an area whose main environmental risk is represented by the increase in temperatures, deforestation and frequent natural disasters. In 2021, YSL Beauty once again confirmed its commitment to this project and to the surrounding regions, in line with the United Nations Decade for Restoring Ecosystems.

2. Haiti, regarding the sourcing of vetiver, an ingredient used in YSL Beauty’s L’Homme and La Nuit de L’Homme and in historic fragrances such as Opium.

Haiti is experiencing an ecological crisis fueled by floods and landslides: primary forest cover has shrunk from 60% in the 1920s to less than 1% today. The remaining territory is a place of biodiversity that is home to an astonishing variety of wildlife, many of which are found nowhere else in the world. Without suitable trees to stabilize the sloping land, the country’s population living downstream is endangered by floods and landslides, resulting in a disastrous cycle of poverty and deforestation fueled by climate change. The brand’s priority is to help protect and manage the remaining important forests of Bois Pangnol as well as the indispensable habitats and species that inhabit them.

3. Madagascar, as regards the supply of vanilla and geranium, ingredients used for Black Opium, Libre, Le Vestiaire des Parfums and Y by YSL Beauty.

In Madagascar, the largest oceanic island in the world and a highly critical area for sustainability, widespread deforestation has compromised an important remaining forest link between two regions that contain areas essential for biodiversity: Analamanga and Alaotra Mangoro. The Anjozorobe Angavo Protected Area is a primary forest corridor that is home to 558 plant species, 9 lemur species, 34 amphibian species, 36 reptile species and 75 bird species. YSL Beauty supports the restoration of this corridor through collaboration between authorities and communities, including a robust site monitoring program, to ensure the health of the ecosystem. The goal of this program is to plant 400,000 trees by 2023.

4. Indonesia, regarding the supply of patchouli, an ingredient used in fragrances including Mon Paris, Black Opium and Le Vestiaire Des Parfums by YSL Beauty. Described as the “freshwater Galapagos”, ancient lakes and areas surroundings of the Indonesian island of Sulawesi are home to some of the world’s most unique flora and fauna habitats. However, in recent years, the risks to this ecosystem have increased dramatically due to the area’s overdevelopment. These lakes are surrounded by largely unexplored forests, which are home to vibrant animal populations and act as watersheds that provide clean water and help to regulate the local climate. In other words, to save the lakes, the forests must be saved. YSL Beauty’s goal in supporting this area is to reduce the impact of invasive species on endemic lake species by restoring more than 16,000 hectares in the Lake Matano area, while also collaborating with communities living on the edge of the forest. to manage, protect and restore 30,000 hectares of forest.

Caroline Nègre, International Sustainability & Scientific Director, YSL Beauty, adds, “With this ambitious new program, YSL Beauty affirms the importance of supporting activities on soil system change: one of nine ‘planetary boundaries’, which have been identified as Planetary limits, which if exceeded, will seriously compromise our planet as a suitable habitat for human development. Our goal is to help protect and restore some of these key places to restore nature to the planet. “

Change the rules, Change the future: An ambitious sustainability platform that puts people and the planet first

YSL Beauty is committed to positive change in the world by focusing on both people and the planet. The brand recently released its first sustainability report and revamped its sustainability platform, known as “Change the Rules, Change the Future”, which encompasses three key pillars. In addition to Rewild Our Earth, these include Reducing Our Impact and Abuse Is Not Love.

For YSL Beauty, this platform marks a new era in sustainability that will define the beauty of the future. Continuing in this direction, the brand’s goal is to exploit innovation to create new possibilities, from the way the brand makes products, to the impact they will have on the world.
