In the streets in Rome against the Global Health Summit: “Health is not a commodity”

Re-launch the demand for “public, free, universal territorial health care”. “Unlinking healthcare from profit”. Denounce how “the multinational drug system continues to profit from vaccine patents”. This morning, in front of the national headquarters of the Italian Association of Private Hospitality (Aiop), in via Lucrezio Caro, in Prati, a press conference was held to announce the reasons for the mobilization which on Friday 21 May will oppose the ‘Global Health Summit ‘ From Rome. The world summit, co-organized by Italy during the G20 presidency year together with the European Commission, will focus on the health challenge posed by the Coronavirus pandemic with the aim of drawing a common line on health policies at a global level.

“We will ask for a radical transformation of health policy, which removes the treatment and the patient from the process of commodification of health”, reads the press release written by the organizers of the event. The appointment is for Friday afternoon at 3 pm at the intersection between via di S. Pancrazio and via del Vascello, close to Villa Pamphilij where the summit will be held. Along the list of memberships: from numerous citizen coordinators for public health to grassroots unions, from counseling centers to neighborhood realities, from student movements to left-wing parties (the complete list below).

“On 21 May workers and health workers and workers from all sectors together with users of the national health system, family members of the RSA-RSD patients and all those who ask not only health but also health”. The location chosen for the launch press conference was not accidental: “The goal is to denounce the enslavement of the national health service to the interests for the profit of private health. Decades of cuts and dismantling of the public service in the area, of closures of public hospitals, outsourcing and privatizations have produced astronomical profits for private health sharks and drug multinationals while millions of proletarians have had to give up treatment. These are the causes that have placed Italy in the first places in the world for the incidence of deaths from Covid in relation to the population, despite this, the government’s economic financial document approved in April by Parliament plans to reduce health expenditure from 127.138 billion in 2021 to 124.410 billion in 2024, with a reduction in the incidence of GDP from 7.3% to 6.3%: but then with what courage do they promote the Global Health Summit? ”.

These are the reasons for the event: “For a new concept of health, unrelated to profit, which allows everyone to have access to health care”; “to relaunch the requests for a public, free, universal and humanized territorial health that takes care of the socio-health needs of people and territories”; “to affirm the #noprofitonpandemic and denounce the multinational drug system that continues to profit from vaccination patents, treatments and management of the Sars-Cov 2 pandemic”; “for a plan of massive permanent hires, the internalization of temporary workers and the elimination of public health contracts”.
