BBC’s latest survival series Freeze the Fear follows a batch of celebrities immersing themselves in some spine-chilling challenges.
Lee Mack and Holly Willoughby will be guiding the stars, while extreme athlete Wim Hof – who is best known for his ability to withstand icy conditions – will be the one pushing the recruits to their limits.
The Dutch motivational speaker, 62, holds an impressive 26 world records for his ability to combat the freezing cold, and even has a breathing method named after him.
So it’s safe to say the icy temperatures won’t affect him one bit, but who will be the ones enduring the chill?
Here’s everything you need to know.
What is Freeze the Fear about?
Across the six-part series, the celebrities will be living together in a tented village surrounded by snow, and be testing themselves – both physically and mentally – with challenges like walking barefoot in the snow and freezing showers.
Holly had no intentions of jumping into any frozen lakes on the show, during an interview on The One Show, she joked that they went to the hotel while the contestants faced their fears in the cold.
At one point, she and funny man Lee tried out the cold showers, with Holly absolutely buzzing that she lasted longer than him.
The host was reduced to tears at ‘many, many’ points during filming, over how impactful the show was as the stars took on risky challenges.
The programme was originally inspired by Holly’s interest in Wim Hof’s methods of deep breathing and cold water therapy in order to stimulate the immune system.
‘When a friend suggested Wim Hof’s breathing method, I tried it,’ she told The Sun.
‘I instantly felt the benefit and couldn’t believe how powerful it was. Something as simple as breathing, which you’ve been doing since the day you were born.
‘But for me that’s the key to the success of this – it’s simple and it can easily become part of your life.’
Who is in the Freeze the Fear line-up?
The celebrities throwing themselves in the deep end (literally) include Alfie Boe, Chelcee Grimes, Owain Wyn Evans, Dianne Buswell, Tamzin Outhwaite, Patrice Evra, Gabby Logan, and Professor Green.
An exclusive preview clip showed broadcaster Gabby jumping into freezing water in just a swimsuit, as the other celebrities watched on in both fear and amazement.
After coming back up to the surface, the presenter struggled to catch her breath, saying, ‘I couldn’t breathe’ as she was encouraged to ‘relax’.
Holly, who watched Gabby in admiration, said: ‘She’s such a strong, strong woman. She was committed, she wanted to do this.
‘But when you hit that cold water, it literally takes your breath away so that whole thing of using your mind to control that fear is unusual.’
What time does Freeze the Fear start?
The first episode of Freeze the Fear drops tonight on BBC One at 9pm – and will air every week until May 17.
During Tuesday’s instalment of Lorraine, Strictly Come Dancing’s Dianne Buswell admitted she came close to quitting the series before filming started – but luckily her boyfriend Joe Sugg convinced her to change her mind.
‘Yeah, it was the day before and I said, “Joe, I think I might just call up and say I’m not doing it,” but he was like, “You definitely can’t,’ she recalled.
‘He really wanted me to do this, he said, “This is so up your street, you’re going to love this.”’
When she asked her boyfriend whether he would’ve taken the plunge and signed up, he told her ‘absolutely not’ before continuing to urge her to give it a go.
‘He was my biggest support and so so proud of me, he came and watched the first episode with me,’ she added.
Is there a trailer for Freeze the Fear?
Indeed there is, and you might want to wrap up warm before you tune in.
Snippets of the trailer show a teary Holly supporting the squirming celebs as they undertake some brutal challenges.
‘No hot tube, no hot showers,’ voiced the Dancing on Ice presenter, as rapper Professor Green screamed his way through an ice bath.
Viral sensation Munya Chawawa and Yung Filly will front the BBC Three spin-off Munya and Filly Get Chilly, which airs an hour after the main show.
Freeze the Fear with Wim Hof premieres on Tuesday April 12 at 9pm.
